The No Nonsense Way to Circular Economy

Circular economy is probably one of the most overused phrases in sustainabilty. But behind the buzzword lies a simple question:

How do we design systems so waste never exists in the first place?

Step 1: Start with Design

Products should be built for durability, repair, and reuse. If it can’t be fixed, it was never circular.

Step 2: Shift the Business Model

Circularity means companies profit from long-term value, not endless sales. Think product-as-a-service (leasing, subscription, repair guarantees) rather than churn and replacement.

Step 3: Close the Loops That Matter

Recycling is part of the puzzle, but it’s the least powerful lever. More impact comes from:

  • Reuse → extending product lifespans.

  • Remanufacturing → using old parts to make “new.”

  • Redesign → removing toxic, non-recyclable materials at the start.

Step 4: Look Beyond Materials

Circular economy isn’t just about physical goods. It applies to energy systems, water use, even data flows. The principle is the same: eliminate waste, maximise value.

Step 5: Keep Equity in the Equation

A circular solution that relies on exploited labor or shifts costs to vulnerable groups isn’t sustainable. True circularity must also be fair and accessible.

The No Nonsense Takeaway

Circular economy is not recycling 2.0. It’s a reimagining of how we produce, consume, and value resources. If your solution still depends on selling more and wasting more, it’s not circular. It’s just linear with new branding.
